Investigating Tissue Image Quality: Carmen’s Research Visit at Bond University

October 13, 2026

In September, following her research secondment at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Carmen Colin Tenorio continued her research visit in Australia at Bond University on the Gold Coast, hosted by Jyotsna Batra and Rupert Ecker. The visit continued the collaborative work on label-free tissue imaging, with a particular focus on acquiring and assessing images for subsequent computational analysis.

At Bond University, Carmen worked on scanning tissue samples prepared on NanoSlides and their corresponding H&E-stained sections. Comparing images acquired using different scanning systems revealed practical challenges, including differences in background appearance and the need to adjust image acquisition and background correction. Understanding these variations is important for determining how consistently the same tissue can be represented across imaging systems and for developing reliable deep-learning-based analysis methods. The visit provided an opportunity to continue the work started in Melbourne and collaborate with researchers bringing complementary expertise in cancer research and tissue imaging.
