From Tissue Preparation to Image Analysis: Carmen’s Research Visit at La Trobe University

October 13, 2026

From late July to 31 August 2026, Carmen Colin Tenorio undertook a research secondment at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, working with Professor Brian Abbey and his team. The visit brought her into contact with the experimental side of her PhD project at TissueGnostics GmbH, which explores deep-learning-based analysis of label-free tissue images. Brian Abbey’s work spans the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences and the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS), providing an interdisciplinary research environment for the visit.

During the secondment, Carmen gained hands-on experience in tissue sectioning, preparing NanoSlides and consecutive H&E-stained sections, slide scanning, and quality control. Working directly with the samples helped her better understand the practical steps behind the images used in computational analysis. It also highlighted the importance of tissue preparation and image acquisition when developing methods that compare label-free NanoSlide images with conventional histology. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to connect experimental work with computational analysis and exchange knowledge with researchers from different backgrounds.
