Carmen Colin’s first secondment to the Medical University of Vienna

December 16, 2025

From November 10th to 21st, 2025, I had the incredible opportunity to spend two weeks on a secondment at the Department of Pathology at the Medical University of Vienna. Under the guidance of Prof. Lukas Kenner and Michaela Schlederer, MSc, I was immersed in a truly inspiring learning environment.

I explored a wide range of fascinating histopathology techniques—an area that perfectly complements my background in biomedical engineering. Since I usually work on developing new methods for image analysis, it was eye-opening to discover firsthand how much effort and time goes into generating the very images that fuel my deep learning algorithms.

I gained hands-on experience in tissue fixation and embedding, preparing tissue sections, and staining samples with classical dyes like H&E. Even more exciting, I had the chance to perform immunofluorescence microscopy and capture images directly with the microscope.

Witnessing the entire journey—from patient sample to final image ready for analysis—was both enlightening and inspiring. This experience not only deepened my appreciation for the complexity behind histopathology but also left me genuinely thrilled and grateful for the opportunity.
