eRaDicate held its 1st School in Santiago de Compostela

April 17, 2025
Day 1 - Topic: lecture day! Cancer stem cells, research culture and sustainability

In our MSCA-Doctoral Network eRaDicate school in Santiago de Compostela, we started the first day with a seminal keynote by eRaDicate scientific advisor Cesar Cobaleda, from the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa (CBM) on Cancer Stem Cells. 🧫🔬

The afternoon was then all about research culture, and sustainability. Martin Trybus from Birmingham, Gerald Obermair from the Karl Landsteiner Privatuniversität, and Jane Hackett from Trinity College Dublin covered important topics such as human rights, diversity, and green university. Finally, Isabella Ellinger and Lukas Kenner from Medizinische Universität Wien, Lidia Tajber from Trinity College Dublin, and Maria Alvarez Bermudez gave exciting lectures on the United Nations SDGs, the dangers of microplastic in the environment, intellectual property rights, and animal welfare in science.

The day was then rounded off by a fantastic tour of the old town of beautiful Santiago de Compostela. 🌇

Day 2 - Topic: communication!

The second day of our MSCA-Doctoral Network eRaDicate school in Santiago de Compostela was all about communication and discussion. 🗣️

In the first talk, award-winning filmmaker Riccardo Vencato from Wannaboo talked with the Doctoral Candidates about science communication through video and showed many published examples of the “language” of video editing. The second talk was by communiations expert Stefan Grünert from Biolution GmbH, who discussed with the DCs the intricacies of academic networking through social media, highlighting important social networks and tips on thier best use. Finally, we had an inspiring lecture by professional graphics designer Franz Tettinger from Donaugrafik, on graphical design principles for every day use, and in particular for designing scientific posters with an emphasis on visual clarity and coherence.

The afternoon was then dedicated to a highly interesting discussion session on the next scientific steps and background of the project. All PIs and DCs participated intensely and especially the DCs asked highly relevant questions and raised many important points. 💡

A culinary tour of varied delicious tapas in the city centre of Santiago de Compostela ended this engaging day. 😋

Day 3 - Topic: Video shooting 🎥 and competence training 💡 with the DCs

The final day of our first eRaDicate school in Santiago de Compostela was exciting and fun for our Doctoral Candidates (DCs). Award-winning filmmaker Riccardo Vencato, together with Martina Cumerlato, from Wannaboo, shot professional individual presentation videos with each of them.

To prepare for this activity, the DCs had written scripts, which were then discussed and adapted for optimal effect in collaboration with Riccardo. Once lighting and positioning were set, Riccardo recorded their presentations and coached them on how to perform naturally in front of the camera. Witnessing how professional and engaged all DCs were, I am eagerly looking forward to seeing the final edited videos! They are expected to leave the editing room in a few weeks and will be shared online – stay tuned 🎞️😊

In parallel, each DC participated in individual KODE competence training sessions with Elisabeth Manhart. KODE is a highly effective method to identify and strengthen key competencies such as problem-solving, collaboration, and innovation, tailored to the specific needs and goals of each participant. This training is designed to equip the DCs with tools that will significantly enhance their academic and professional journeys.

Once all videos were “in the can” and all training sessions had concluded, the first school of our MSCA-Doctoral Network eRaDicate in Santiago de Compostela came to a successful close.
